DIY Bixie Haircut

What’s a cross between a shag, bob, pixie, and possibly mullet? shabixet? For simplicity’s sake, I’m sharing my DIY bixie haircut with you today keeping it in the bob/pixie realm. But you get the idea. While a bixie isn’t a new idea being popular in the 90’s, it definitely made its head in the 20’s as well.

I enjoy my curls to the full since learning I am a curly girl four years ago. Yes, I went my entire life not knowing I had textured hair. Due in part to certain people not wanting me to have curly hair, but also untrained hairdressers lumping me into a basic category.

The above/below photo is a “bad” hair day – aka. wash day.

I spent the last two days felling a triple trunk tree and cutting it said trees, so I still have sawdust glitter in my fuel-scented hair.

Ain’t no shame in my game. I earned that hair, baby.

And, the night of wash day, I don’t sleep in my curly protection (a soft gator or bonnet), which is honestly the best feeling ever. (to not have anything on my head when I go to bed).

I show in my vlog below what I wear to protect my curls at nighttime, in case you’re curious.

Oh, and I just did a beef gelatin protein mask treatment the weekend before this that I do at 4-5 week intervals.

MY PROCESS

While learning about my hair, I find myself keep wondering what it would be like to see my curl pattern in a fun, short haircut.

So… off to the scissors I go.

And, before you jump to conclusions, I’ve been cutting hair all my life, so I’m not new to this. Nor am I afraid to try. In addition, I’ve taught each of my six children how to cut hair as well.

See my previous posts listed below:

On most days, I enjoy my hair like you see in this recent post.

However, when I see myself in my vlogs or working pictures, I get tired of my ear sticking out like I have mutton chops.

My family often made fun of my ears though I don’t mind them. They work and are… ears. ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯

With that, let’s get this DIY bixie haircut party started!!

My vlog below shows everything better than photos do, but for reference sake, here are the steps.

STEP 1

First, I wash my hair as I normally would for cutting my own. Then, I section off from my ear forward so I can trim my bangs. I trim those by overdirecting left to right and vice versa to create a curtain bang.

STEP 2

Next, using my front middle bang length as my guide, I pull sections forward and trim using end point cutting to give even more texture. This is the shag portion of the style.

STEP 3

Once I have that length as I like, I begin to take sections at a 90-degree angle from the sides using the bottom length as my guide. I debated on angling my cut up towards my crown and pilonidal ridge but want to check it before I have that kind of layering. (the pilodinal ridge is the horseshoe shape of our head where the side meets the top, basically)

Here I’m trying not to nick my fingers while I point cut.

Gotta love this mullet look, eh?

I could stop here, but not really desiring Billy Ray vibes.

STEP 4

At this point, I want my daughter to help do the sectioning and layering at the back, then style so I can assess. (see diagrams for back HERE)

This is my third daughter, Miss E, following my tutorial that my second daughter helped me with initially. Miss S was out of the country at the time, and I couldn’t stand to wait 8 weeks for a trim. haha.

I do have a double crown to deal with as well as a cowlick in the front.

Pinch me, because I still can’t believe those are my curls… eep!

STEP 5

At this point I want to style my hair so I can assess if I need to do any changeups while my hair finds its “feet”. I use my diffuser to pixie diffuse then let finish air drying and scrunch.

I had to leave for that day, so I did do a bit of very minor tweaks between my first wash and my final hair. My hair always looks straighter after the cut because of all the pulling and such.

You can not only see it was a bit heavy at the corners of my face, so I did angle my layering up. Also, I took the bottom up to the next layer as well.

However, that first night I wear my gator and woke up to this…

not me thinking… “whaaaaaaatttt…..”

Lemme just say that in the last several years, EVERY DAY I could pull off the gator, fluff and go. I only refreshed the second day after a wash and that was IT.

Now, I have to refresh daily, which is a trade I knew I was making as I have had short hair before and it takes more maintenance.

MEET BIXIE

This is after my first wash and third day refresh and feels like my hair is settling in to this new groove.

I’ve been working like a BEAST immediately after this continuing in my backyard, so I haven’t had much time to play with it.

I do miss my ringlets and the lesser amount of morning work. But I had to see what this was like and planned to grow it back out eventually, anyway, if I see fit.
