Can you blame me if I’ve been a bit twitchy at having all of my supplies and tools for work in boxes for the last six months? Not only that, but they have been in house, in my way, and taking up precious space. It could be worse, right? But I don’t minimize any longer. I’m allowed to be anxious to get my DIY garage storage complete. Let’s get this organizing party started!

Here’s the “before” of this new garage o’mine.

In case you’re wondering, this is a new build that just passed final inspection from the beginning of the build a few months ago.

I’m finally able to park in it, but until I get this “stuff” organized, I have continued to park outside. Partly because I have half of my goodies at my daughter’s garage, and the other half taking up critical space in my new home.

As you can see from my previous post, I’ve been able to add my DIY pet food dispenser, DIY tilt-out recycling cabinet, and my DIY boot and helmet racks. (see all free build plans HERE)

However, I still have so much to stow away and need to take a pit stop to make sense of everything so I can continue my work. I also have a garage full to bring from my daughter’s garage. Which involves many trips of loading and unloading, fishing through stuff, and deciding what is necessary.

What’s crazy is I just did a makeover on my previous home garage and garage door so this feels like Deja vu.

But hey… at least I can, right?

What is more, I have all this scrap wood leftover from this build that they wanted to toss in the dumpster.

Not on my watch!

Instead, every day after their build, I went out and sorted what was actually trash and good supplies. Including house wrap, siding, tons of nails, wood, and so much more. I’ve given much of it away and kept what I can use.

In the initial planning stages, I figured on using the shelves I brought over from my previous home that have been tucked in my newly remodeled entry.

However, I find them to take up floor space and cover over studs I can use for storage instead. So, out they go back into the entry until they find a new home. Onto building!

As I show in my video vlog below, I share how I start in this stud corner.

I spy great potential here and definitely a waste of space if not utilized, right?

First, as I show in my video below, I had to cut dozens of long staples sticking out between the studs. Not sure why the builders would leave such an unsafe part, However, I’m not about to let my kids, nor I get hurt on them.

Next, I set to measuring my scrap stash and taking inventory of sizes that will work.

Then, using my miter saw with my handy-dandy DIY saw hood, I cut to length.

Once cut, I use my pocket-hole jig to make holes on the bottom of each shelf so they can mount between the studs.

Before long, I tire of the sawdust as I typically have a shop vacuum that sucks the dust out of the hood. So… to make-do for now, I use my household vacuum instead. hee hee.

SO MUCH FOR PLANS

In case you’re wondering about my Mt. Digmore process, I had to put a hold on that while we had torrential rains come.

And if you know about clay it will puddle like this. Thankfully, the French drain did its job for the pond I used to have. However, the topsoil and sand mixing I had planned has to wait. In addition, my $100 bag of grass seed is wasted. We even got snow today on April 20th!

Maddeningly, I took my mower blade to be sharpened by a local place, and they’ve had it FOUR WEEKS!!

I wanted the grass clippings to help amend the soil. After waiting so long, I just bought another and finally am able to feel relief at that project too.

HELPER

At the same time, I’m inside working my DIY garage storage magic. And as always, I invite my kiddos to have their hand at a try if they like. My youngest did a few shelves and got the feel of how heavy my drill is to use on a daily basis.

Then, after loads of measuring, cutting, and installing, my sanity is restored.

Is it organized mess? Yes, of sorts.

But… it’s mine.

Mine to cherish and to use to take care of my family and my blessings.

Armed with a bunch of “trash” wood, a box of screws, and my tools, I am able to make sense of my chaos.

Those bits are from the pallets of supplies for my garage build. I cut on a 15° angle and attach on either side of the studs. It is the same storage I built in my garden shed remodel HERE.

Then, the scoop shovel is resting on a notched 2″ x 4″ mounted with pocket holes underneath.

Additionally, I want my car ramps and ladders off the floor, so I use more scrap to make a mount to suit them. I’m my own mechanic for as much as I feel like doing – see HERE.

FLIP SIDE

On the flip side of this space, I add a shelf for my camping chairs. In order to keep them there, I use a couple simple dollar bungees to hold them in.

It’s just like the ball holder I built in my shed linked above. Also, I use one to hold my extension ladder in place.

Last, but not least, I have my workshop area at the back. Notice the cupboard I had to pull out of my laundry area? Had to make use of that, of course.

“A place for everything and everything in its place” (attr. to B. Franklin) comes to mind.

Now I can SEE all my tools and supplies, can find them without digging in a box or hunting all over.

I sigh in relief.

The biggest expense for this was a tool rack for my brooms and such. As well as a pegboard with hooks.

This lady is happy to have her space ready for many more DIY adventures.

And trust me… there’s plenty to come. Especially since I’m a slave to the weather at the moment.
