My son’s bedroom got all the attention after we moved in, but now it’s time for my daughters’ bedroom turn with some DIY closet shelves.
If you recall, in my interior home tour I mention upgrading this spot in their walk-in closet by adding custom shelves.
While I have a dozen different projects going on, this one is one domino in a series of events that play off each other.
In order for me to be able to finish my entry, I need to build my daughters’space to store their shoes and other essentials.
FREEZING DIY
First, I head back out into my freezing-almost-finished garage to cut the cabinet-grade plywood to fit.
If you look closely, the plywood is ripped to fit depth, but then I’m also cutting on a 45° angle with my circular saw. That will allow the shelves to fit snug against the slope of the roof.
My youngest has fun using my angle finder to help me in this plan.
After that, I use my pocket hole jig to make holes on the bottom sides of the shelf.
As you can see in my vlog (video) below, I first use the holes to drill pilot holes into the wall.
That allows me to add anchors before securely attaching the shelves.
Also, I sink into a stud whenever possible for extra reinforcement.
This was a painstaking process, but so worth it when I want these to last and be sturdy for many items.
And who’s to say you can’t have a little fun while you’re at it. (I explain the details of that nonsense in my video)
LEVEL UP
After installation, here are the DIY closet shelves almost ready to go.
Before adding support braces to the longer shelves, I add strips of edge-banding like I did in my son’s closet. Additionally, I use it on furniture projects HERE.
Simply follow instructions by ironing on, trimming after it cools, and you’re good to go.
Finally, here are the shelves full of my three girls’ shoes and accessories. woot!
Notice these are all barefoot (aka. minimalist) shoes. We wouldn’t have it any other way! Read more on my healing journey HERE.
I’m thankful this is one more step closer to getting this new home into shape.

What a great way to use what otherwise would be wasted space! I LOVE an organized home!! When you can find what you need, there’s less possibility of buying the same thing twice or getting something you “think” will work! Now if I could only get my closets to clean themselves!! 🤣 Way to go!!! 🥰

What a great use for that odd niche. Despite being unfinished and freezing, I bet it feels so good to have your garage space for working on projects instead of indoors. One more item off the To Do List – you go girl!
